Titel: Residence Permit - Difference between german states?
Beitrag von KThomsen am 29.03.2017 um 08:07:41
Hi everyone,

Hopefully someone knows a bit about this and can help me out:

My wife and I will be moving to Germany and I was researching online where to go to apply for the residence permit for her within the first 90 days of our stay there.

When I googled it, I was directed to service.berlin.de, and then it hit me: How does it work in Germany with all the different states? (Bundesländer)

From what I understand the overall "law" is the same all across Germany, but I have heard that these applications are dealt with locally? So maybe it would be easier/faster to apply in a different state, than another?

So e.g. there's a lot of people living in Berlin, but very little in Bremen, so would it be better/easier/faster to live in and apply for residence permit in Bremen rather than Berlin?

Or do all the applications go to the same office/ministry in the end?

Hopefully someone can help me with this. :)

Thanks!

You will apply for residence permit in the town or district you are goin to live.

Am in guessing right that you are an EU-citizen but your wife is non-EU ?

And you are right in big cities like Berlin the offices have more to do so usually everything goes faster in smaller towns. Beside that the law is the same so if you want to live in Berlin then do it.

Great! :) Thanks for your answer!

And yes, you are correct. I am a Danish national and my spouse is a non-EU national! :)

I've heard from 4 danish nationals who live in Flensburg, that they got their residence card in 3-4 weeks. That's pretty quick, compared to Denmark, I must say! :)
